A late 19th-century Chinese export Rose Medallion tea set, made at a time when Chinese porcelain was deeply fashionable in affluent American and European interiors. Rose Medallion became one of the most recognizable decorative styles of the 19th-century China trade, with court figures, peonies, birds, butterflies, and scrolling foliage painted in dense famille rose enamels. Comparable Canton wares from the period show the same combination of figural scenes, floral reserves, insects, and gilt decoration.

The porcelain itself was hand-finished, from shaping and glazing to the enamel decoration applied by hand before firing. The fitted basket was likewise made by hand and constructed around a padded interior lined in pink silk, each section formed to hold and protect the individual porcelain pieces. Closely related late 19th-century Chinese tea baskets used thick textile padding for both protection and insulation, turning the entire service into a compact portable object.

These were luxury objects with a practical purpose. Portable tea services allowed tea to be carried beyond the formal dining room, whether while traveling, visiting, or taking tea outdoors. Fitted baskets for tea wares were carefully made to keep fragile porcelain secure and organized in transit.

The Western appetite for Chinese export porcelain was significant among wealthy buyers and collectors. In 1868, First lady Julia Grant ordered a 315-piece Chinese export service through a merchant in China for use in the White House, a useful glimpse of the status these wares held in elite American households.

This smaller portable set has survived with its porcelain, fitted basket, metal hardware, padded silk, teapot, cup, and associated pieces still together. The silk is faded and frayed, the porcelain shows minor expected wear, and the tea pot lid bears an old repair. The completeness is what makes it especially compelling
